Annual Report

FLY (Freedom for Limitated Youth) Charitable Trust FLY is a vibrant community organization that has been working with dedication for the empowerment, inclusion, and social justice of differently abled individuals for nearly two decades. Founded in 2006 and registered as a public charitable trust, FLY emerged with a bold and compassionate vision — to create a society where every individual can live with dignity, independence, and equal opportunities. Unlike conventional organizations, FLY is not an exclusive space for differently abled individuals. It welcomes everyone who believes in standing together, supporting one another, and promoting physical, mental, and social well-being. Over the years, FLY has grown into a powerful platform of unity, creativity, and opportunity, making a meaningful impact on lives and communities across Kerala.

The organization is led by an 11-member Trust, which includes seven differently-abled individuals. This inclusive structure ensures that the organization remains deeply connected to the voices and aspirations of the people it serves. Supported by an active Executive Committee, the Trust plans, coordinates, and implements a wide range of initiatives throughout the year. These efforts focus on areas such as livelihood creation, cultural empowerment, healthcare support, social inclusion, and the promotion of independence and dignity.

A cornerstone of FLY’s journey is the Sahavasa Camps, which have been conducted consistently for 18 years, except during the flood years and the Covid-19 pandemic. These camps are more than just events — they are spaces of companionship, creativity, and personal growth. Participants engage in music, dance, painting, writing, and other art forms that help them express themselves freely and build self-confidence. Cultural leaders, ministers, writers, and public figures often visit these camps, adding their encouragement and support, which further strengthens the sense of community.

FLY places strong emphasis on economic self-reliance and has built a thriving livelihood program that provides employment opportunities to many differently-abled individuals. The Fly Umbrellas production unit stands as a symbol of this success. Trained members manufacture high-quality umbrellas from their homes, and the brand has earned a reputation for trust and quality in the market. Along with umbrella production, members also make and sell handwash, dishwash, washing powder, jewelry, headbands, slippers, and other handcrafted products. These activities are not just sources of income—they are pathways to dignity, self-respect, and empowerment.

The cultural face of FLY shines through its Fly Music Payyannur wheelchair troupe, which has become a source of inspiration across the state. With more than 200 performances, including appearances on Flowers TV, the troupe spreads powerful messages of hope, inclusion, and resilience through music. Their performances break stereotypes and prove that talent knows no boundaries. This troupe is a living example of how art can become a tool of empowerment.

Creative expression holds a special place within FLY. The organization publishes “Chirak”, an a magazine that showcases stories, Life experience , poems, artwork, and achievements of its members. Three members have successfully published their own books with FLY’s support, sharing their thoughts and experiences with a larger audience. The FLY art community includes ten talented painters, among whom three are mouth paint artists. Their works have been widely appreciated, and the Fly stall received the Best Stall Award at the government’s anniversary exhibition—recognition of the excellence and artistry of the community.

Exploration and mobility are integral to FLY’s mission. The organization has organized many wheelchair journeys and group trips to destinations such as Mysore and Wayanad, giving members new experiences, fostering friendships, and proving that travel and adventure are for everyone. These trips also help build confidence, break social barriers, and bring joy to members and their families.

During the Covid-19 crisis, FLY stood firmly with its members. Through voluntary contributions and partnerships, the organization successfully raised ₹4,000 per member over three years to support essential needs. It also facilitated the distribution of assistive devices, including electronic wheelchairs, in collaboration with public representatives and voluntary agencies. This timely intervention provided both practical support and emotional reassurance during one of the most challenging periods in recent memory.

Healthcare and emergency support are vital components of FLY’s community spirit. In collaboration with public representatives and partner organizations, FLY has helped many individuals access essential medical and mobility equipment. Members also support one another during hospital visits, emergencies, and personal hardships, showcasing the strong bond and solidarity within the FLY family. These efforts reflect not just organizational service, but deep human connection and care.

Livelihood remains at the heart of FLY’s activities. The organization continues to create self-employment opportunities for those in need, enabling them to support themselves and their families with pride. Its future vision is both ambitious and inspiring. FLY dreams of owning its own land, a dedicated building, and a vehicle that will further enhance its ability to serve the community. The building would provide a permanent space for training, healthcare, cultural events, and livelihood initiatives under one roof. A dedicated vehicle would allow the music troupe to reach more venues, amplify their impact, and inspire wider audiences.

Beyond its immediate programs, FLY plays an active role in advancing social justice, self-sufficiency, employment opportunities, and freedom of movement. Every initiative is designed to build a society where differently abled individuals can live with dignity, independence, and equal opportunities. FLY is committed to making this vision a reality through collective action, community strength, and meaningful partnerships. Looking ahead, the organization aims to expand its livelihood programs, establish permanent facilities for Sahavasa Camps and training, develop stronger marketing networks for its products, and create more platforms for cultural and artistic expression. It also plans to enhance access to assistive technologies and improve mobility infrastructure to ensure that differently-abled individuals can participate fully in all aspects of life. FLY is more than a charitable trust—it is a movement of inclusion, empowerment, and creativity. With each activity, it spreads a powerful message: differently-abled individuals are not to be pitied or sidelined, but celebrated, respected, and given the opportunities they deserve. Through its remarkable journey, FLY proves that true wings are not found on our backs—they are in our hearts. FLY — FLY Without Wings. Inspiring Change, Building Dreams, Empowering Lives.
